Interview on The Great Discontent

March 13, 2012  |   4 Comments »

If you haven’t been reading The Great Discontent, you are missing out. Ryan and Tina have put together one of the best interview sites on the web, featuring creatives from a variety of fields. Everything from the design to the editing and flow of the interviews is done with great attention to detail. It’s refreshing to read the personal story of how each person got to where they are today, rather than typical interview questions like “What tools do you use to design?”

I had the pleasure of chatting with them recently about my creative journey and the story of how Ugmonk came to be. Click here to read the interview.

Leather Mousepads and Mini Sketchbook Set

March 13, 2012  |   No Comments »

Beautify your desk with a new premium leather mousepad. The thick leather provides a cushion for your hand and a smooth surface for your mouse. The leather will slowly transform over time as you use it and take on a unique wear pattern according the your individual use. Choose from either a natural vegetable-tanned leather or brown latigo leather. Each mousepad measures 9″ x 7.5″ x .125″ with finished edges and rounded corners. Handcrafted right here in the USA.

We’re also introducing a new set of mini-sketchbooks with 3 of our favorite phrase designs: Don’t Just Stand There, There’s More To Life, and Do What You Love. The books each contain 32 blank pages, measuring 3.5″ x 5″ – a perfect size to carry in a pocket or bag and capture those moments of inspiration. They are printed with soy-base inks and made from 100% recycled paper. To finish it off, the set comes packed in a handy embossed Ugmonk ship pack.

New Range of Mountains

March 1, 2012  |   9 Comments »

When we released it last spring, the Mountains tee became our fastest selling product to date. We’re excited to bring an encore with today’s release of a new range of items!

First, a fresh new color Mountains tee. Printed on a charcoal gray shirt, the deep orange, green, and white print makes for a nice variation on the original.

Need and extra layer to stay warm but don’t want to hide the classic design? Now you can get Mountains on a super soft lightweight pullover hoody. The hoody features the original colorway of red, cyan, and white printed on black.

Love to daydream about the mountains as much as I do? Now you can lean back at your desk and be drawn in as you admire this 24 x 18 inch print hanging on your wall. Like the hoody, the print also features the original Mountains colorway.

Head over to the shop and pick up the new range of Mountains items. Save 10% when you enter code “MOUNTAINS” at checkout.

2011 Charity Drive Recap

January 3, 2012  |   4 Comments »

I’m excited to announce that we set a new record this year for our annual charity drive! With your help, we were able to provide 1687 days of meals for needy children around the globe. That’s over 5000 meals!

Thanks to everyone who purchased items and helped us achieve this record. We’re looking forward to doing even more next year. If you didn’t get a chance to participate but would still like to donate, just head over to www.ricebowls.org.

Check out this little video that we received from one of the orphanages in India to thank us for our support. It’s awesome to see some of the similing faces of the kids that we’re able to help.

Do the Work

December 29, 2011  |   13 Comments »

When I started Ugmonk I knew very little about how to run a business and manage a brand. I didn’t study entrepreneurship or take a special class on “How to Start a Tshirt Company.” I just had a passion for design and wanted to create awesome products. Too many people are looking for the “3 Easy Steps to Creating a Successful Brand.” They want to know the secrets of how to create “buzz”, get better website traffic and sell more products. Unfortunately there’s no magic formula and it’s just about doing the work.

From the start I’ve always focussed on creating unique products that people will want to talk about which is key, but a lot of what has brought Ugmonk to where it is today is just putting in the time to figure things out for myself. Some people may think I get to sit around and design all day, but I actually spend a huge chunk of time every week doing less glamorous things like email, customer service, contacting sources, editing photos, ordering supplies, etc.

One of the biggest motivating factors about running my own business is knowing that if I don’t get something done, it will never get done. I don’t have a bunch of employees to delegate the things that I don’t feel like doing.1 This means that even the boring, tedious tasks won’t get completed unless I just do them (and trust me, I’m a procrastinator if there ever was one).

So my advice is simple: hustle, put in the time, and do the work!

[1] Though Ugmonk wouldn’t be where it is today without a ton of help from my family.

Design Process

I’ve written about my design process more extensively here and here, but I wanted to share some of the original sketches for Don’t Just Stand There to show the evolution from start to finish.
